River Activities — Starlight Resort, Dandeli
Kali River, Dandeli

Dandeli River Activities

From a lazy float to a Grade III rapid — pick how wild you want your day to get.

All six activities run right out of the Kali River and are listed below from calmest to wildest, so you can pick your pace before you book. Every session comes with trained staff and safety gear — you don't need to bring anything but yourself.

Season: October – June Best rapids: Oct – March Swimming ability: not required Gear: included

Here's the lineup — calm water first, the big rapids last.

01
Easiest on this list

Boating

A slow ride on the calmest stretch of the river — for anyone who wants to be on the water without getting splashed.

Intensity: Calm
Duration10–20 minutes
Boat typeMotor boat or coracle
Good forAll ages, non-swimmers
Group sizeUp to 6 per boat

What happens

  • You board right from the bank — a motor boat or a coracle (the round bamboo basket boat used here).
  • Life jackets go on before anyone steps in, even strong swimmers.
  • The boatman takes you along a quiet stretch, away from any rapids.
  • No paddling needed — just sit back and watch the forest line go by.

Good to know: Early morning or late afternoon rides are calmest and best for photos and birdwatching.

Coracles feel wobblier than they look — that's normal, the boat is built to be stable.

02
On hot afternoons

River Swimming

A dip in a roped-off, shallow stretch of the Kali — not the whole river, just the part that's checked and marked safe.

Intensity: Calm
SessionOpen swim, set hours
Good forSwimmers & non-swimmers
SupervisionLifeguard on duty

What happens

  • You swim only inside the zone marked out with ropes or flags — checked daily for depth and current.
  • Non-swimmers get a life jacket and stay in the shallow edge with a guide close by.
  • Swimming pauses or shifts if extra water is released upstream — your guide will tell you if timing changes.

Good to know: Don't swim past the marked zone, even if the water looks calm — currents pick up fast just beyond it.

Carry a change of clothes; there's no need to dry off before heading to lunch.

03
Paddle at your own pace

Kayaking

You're in control here — your own kayak, your own speed, on a stretch flat enough to actually enjoy it.

Intensity: Easy–Moderate
Duration10–15 minutes
Kayak typeSingle or tandem
Training10-min briefing on land
Good forFirst-timers & regulars

What happens

  • A quick demo on holding the paddle and steering, done on the bank before you launch.
  • You launch from a calm stretch — no rapids on the kayaking route.
  • Tandem kayaks are the easier pick if you're paddling with a partner or a child who can swim.

Good to know: Closed shoes or sandals with a back strap work better than flip-flops, which tend to float off.

If you tip over — rare on this stretch — just stand up, the water here is shallow enough to wade.

04
Zero swimming skill needed

River Zorbing

You get zipped inside a giant inflatable ball and bounce across the water — less about adrenaline, more about laughing at yourself.

Intensity: Calm
Duration5–10 min per turn
RidersOne person per ball
Good forKids & adults, within weight limit

What happens

  • Staff seal you inside a double-layer ball with an air cushion between you and the water.
  • You roll and float across a calm patch of river, guided by a rope from the bank.
  • You'll feel some water seep in around the seal — wear clothes you don't mind getting damp.

Good to know: There's a minimum and maximum size for the ball to seal properly — staff check this before you go in.

Skip this one if you're claustrophobic — the ball is sealed shut for the ride.

05
The quickest adrenaline hit

Zipline

A harness, a steel cable, and a ride straight across the river canopy. Over almost as fast as it starts.

Intensity: Moderate (height, not skill)
Slot length10 min, incl. gear-up
Ride timeUnder a minute
Good forAges 10+, within weight limit

What happens

  • You're harnessed and clipped onto the cable at the platform — staff check every buckle.
  • A push-off, then you glide across with the river and forest canopy underneath you.
  • Staff on the other end catch and unclip you at landing.

Good to know: Tie back loose hair and remove dangling jewellery before you go up.

Scared of heights more than speed? It's still worth trying — it's over before the nerves catch up.

06
The main event

River Rafting

This is what most people come to Dandeli for — a raft, a crew, and a real river to get through together. Pick how far you want to go.

Age12 years and up
Swimming abilityNot required — life jacket worn always
Group size6–8 per raft + 1 guide
Gear includedHelmet, life jacket, paddle
Short

First-timer run

Distance
1–1.5 km
Duration
30–45 min
Rapids
Grade I
Mid

Real thrill, half the time

Distance
4–6 km
Duration
1.5–2 hrs
Rapids
Grade II
Long

The full run

Distance
9–12 km
Duration
3+ hrs
Rapids
Grade II–III

What happens

  • A jeep takes you to the starting point, about 10 minutes from the jetty (only for some jetty).
  • A safety briefing on land covers paddle strokes, your guide's commands, and what to do if you go in the water.
  • On the river, the guide steers and calls strokes — you paddle through the rapids, then drift the calm patches in between.
  • You finish at a take-out point downriver, where a jeep brings you back.

Good to know: The river's flow depends on water released from the Supa Dam upstream, so timings can shift by an hour or two — your guide confirms the exact slot the evening before.

Wear quick-dry clothes and shoes that stay on — no flip-flops. Leave phones, wallets, and jewellery at the room.
